Our Programs
We offer programs for children in pre-k programs through elementary school.
Pre-k/Kindergarten Hunger Program
Our six-week program introduces young children (ages 4 and 5) to nutrition and the importance of food in their daily lives. Through songs, stories and art, we talk about the problem of hunger and how it affects children in our community. Children learn about the work of the Alameda County Community Food Bank and help fight hunger by collecting pennies (aka “good cents”) and other coins, all of which are donated to the Food Bank.
Elementary School Penny Roundup Program
Elementary school children are ready to take the next step and make decisions about how they’ll help their communities. Our 10-week program raises awareness about different issues facing kids, animals and the planet with age-appropriate materials and provides inspiring profiles of community leaders, including those currently working in Oakland. Importantly, children are responsible for all the major decisions within the program, including whether the school will help kids, animals or the planet, which issue the school will address and to which non-profit the school will present the proceeds of their Penny Roundup. Children of all ages are given opportunities to join leadership groups.
In addition to making a grant to a non-profit, Good Cents for Oakland provides teachers with enrichment ideas and worksheets for use in their classroom to help
build their students’ knowledge of language arts, social studies, math, financial literacy and civics.
City-wide Service Days
We partner with community organizations, local businesses and city agencies to create free family service and learning days for the Oakland community. Families and community members work together to help Oakland. Our next City-wide Service Day for the Planet is coming up on Sunday, September 28th from 1-4pm at Dimond Park.
We hope to extend our programming to local middle schools next school year.
