Our Programs
We offer programs for children in pre-k through fifth grade. We are currently developing a program for Oakland middle schools.
Elementary School Penny Roundup Program
Elementary school children are ready to take the next step and make decisions about how they’ll help their communities. Our 10-week program raises awareness about different issues facing kids, animals and the planet with age-appropriate materials and provides inspiring profiles of community leaders, including those currently working in Oakland. Importantly, children are responsible for all the major decisions within the program, including whether the school will help kids, animals or the planet, which issue the school will address and to which non-profit the school will present the proceeds of their Penny Roundup. Children of all ages are given opportunities to join leadership groups.
In addition to making a grant to a non-profit, Good Cents for Oakland provides teachers with enrichment ideas and worksheets for use in their classroom to help
build their students’ knowledge of language arts, social studies, math, financial literacy and civics.
Pre-k/Kindergarten Hunger Program
Our six-week program introduces young children (ages 4 and 5) to nutrition and the importance of food in their daily lives. Through songs, stories and art, we talk about the problem of hunger and how it affects children in our community. Children learn about the work of the Alameda County Community Food Bank and help fight hunger by collecting pennies (aka “good cents”) and other coins, all of which are donated to the Food Bank.
Community Outreach Events
Working collaboratively with community partners like the Alameda County Community Food Bank, Project Outreach/East Oakland Food Pantry and 510akland, we host community outreach events where families with elementary school children can work together to serve our City.
