City Wide Service Days
There are few opportunities in our community for families with elementary school children to volunteer.
Good Cents for Oakland’s City-wide Service Days are family volunteer days and opportunities to inform children about issues affecting our city.
City-wide Service Day for the Planet
We hold our City-wide Service Day for the Planet at Dimond Park in Oakland each fall. Families help take care of the park, plant seedlings for local community and school gardens then play games and participate in activities that teach families how to reduce waste by practicing the 4Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot) at home.
Good Cents for Oakland hosted its 2nd City-wide Service Day for the Planet
at Dimond Park in September 2008. This event was sponsored by: PG&E, Bank
of the West, Waste Management, YEAH, Friends of Oakland Parks and Recreation
and Whole Foods. We thank sponsors and our community partners, Oakland
Parks and Recreation, Redwood Day School's Growing Up G.R.E.E.N. and East
Bay Depot for Creative Reuse for making this event such a success.
City-wide Service Days are geared toward families with elementary school
children. Families work together to clean Dimond Park or plant seedlings
for Oakland community and school gardens. Then, join in activities designed
to provide kids with real examples of how they can save the planet by using
the 4Rs by making art with reusable materials, solar projects and games like
cork catapult, bottle bowling and recycling toss.
Good Cents for Oakland was founded in 2005 to help make children aware of the issues that face Oakland’s kids, animals and the planet, give them age-appropriate information about those issues and inspire them to take action to help our City. Over 2,000 children currently participate in our service learning programs. For more information, please visit www.goodcentsforoakland.org.
