Turning kids into community activists and pennies
into Good Cents
We give kids age-appropriate information about issues that affect Oakland and then give them the opportunity to help. Students are responsible for all major decisions in our program. They vote as a school on whether to support food, shelter, health, safety, education or youth programs and then choose a non-profit that addresses their issue in Oakland. The kids advocate for their cause, raising pennies (aka Good Cents) and other coins to make a grant to the non-profit they've chosen.
Students in our program raised more than $35,000 for Oakland non-profits since 2005. Over 2,000 students at 10 schools participate in our program today. We can do more with your help.
We support Oakland schools
Our program is free to public schools, because we know Oakland schools have limited resources. We grant 100% of what students raise to their chosen non-profit. We are a small grassroots non-profit based in Oakland dedicated to make our City a better place. We rely on individual, corporate and foundation funds to support our programming.
A commitment to community
Working collaboratively with community partners like the Alameda County Community Food Bank, Project Outreach/East Oakland Food Pantry, and 510akland, we host community outreach events where families with elementary school children can work together to make Oakland a better place. Check our Community Outreach Events to find upcoming opportunities to serve our City.
